Overlooking Hyde Park
Hyde Park is Australia’s oldest public park, and an institution in the city of Sydney that is loved by locals and tourists alike. Located at the doorstep of the hotel, guests of Sheraton on The Park Sydney have unrivalled access to the beautiful Hyde Park.
Hyde Park, Sydney
Named after its equivalent in The United Kingdom, Sydney's own Hyde Park is a 40 acre fig-lined park where locals and visitors alike congregate under the shade of the fig trees. Throughout its long history, the park has played host to a wide range of sporting activities, until its transformation into public gardens in 1856. Prior to the construction of the 'Bellevue' in 1825, Hyde Park played host to number of Sydney's most famous horse racing meetings, including the first official horse race in October 1810, where officer of the 73rd Regiment raced around a makeshift course in the park. Cricket was played in the park up until the 1850s, when a series of on-going issues with other visitors of the park, forced cricket matches to be switched to the Domain. Rugby has also moved away to a permanent home in Sydney Cricket Ground.
The Monuments of Hyde Park
Whilst the park may be more well-known for its fig tree lined avenues, the monuments and fountains of Hyde Park are well worth a visit. The Archibald Fountain sits at the heart of Hyde Park, and is a permanent reminder of the many Australian servicemen who assisted the people of France during World War I. Forming a hexagonal shape, the fountain is hugely popular with visitors for the picturesque backdrop, which entices many budding photographers to the city. Closer to the Museum railway station is the more secluded ANZAC War Memorial and the 'Lake of Reflections', built to commemorate the contributions of the Australian Imperial Force during World War I. Now Hyde Park is surrounded by several corporate buildings, shopping centres and hotels in Sydney CBD.
